Year 1976 Arabia Kalevala Series Annual Plate No. 1
Kalevala motif. Design Raija Uosikkinen. Signature and authentic Arabia, Finland on back. Made of stoneware. Being the first in the series (1976–1999, totally 24 plates), these first year plates were produced in very limited quantities. They are highly valued and much sought-after. No reprinting possible.
"Now I stoop the seeds to scatter, / as from the Creator's fingers, / from the Hand from Him Almighty, / that the country may be fertile / and the corn may grow and flourish."
This is a quotation from the Finnish National Epic Kalevala. The words are written in English, Finnish and Swedish on the backside of the plate. The famous Arabia artist Raija Uosikkinen has chosen to depict the Kalevala lines in brown, golden beige, black, white and deepest dark blue, giving the plate a very rustic touch. The picture shows Väinämöinen planting seeds in his flourishing garden, while birds are sitting in the trees and fishes are swimming below.
The plate comes mint in box. The box is slightly torn (almost not visible) where it opens.
