Year 1978 Arabia Kalevala Series Annual Plate No. 3
Kalevala motif. Design Raija Uosikkinen. Signature and authentic Arabia, Finland on back. Made of stoneware. This is the third plate in the series of 24 (1976–1999). It is made in a limited edition with no reprinting possible.
"He, the lively Lemminkainen, / Chased the elk upon his snowshoes, / Glided o'er the land and marshes, / O'er the open wastes he glided. / FIre was crackling from his snowshoes, / From his staff's end smoke ascending."
This is a quotation from the Finnish National Epic Kalevala. It is written in English, Finnish and Swedish on the backside of the plate. The famous Arabia artist Raija Uosikkinen has chosen to depict the Kalevala lines in brown, golden beige, white, black and deepest dark blue, giving the plate a very rustic touch. The picture shows Lemminkainen on his snowshoes/skis, the Elk and a black Cock of the Wood hiding in the trees.
The plate comes in perfect condition. No original box, no hanging device.
