Year 1979 Arabia Kalevala Series Annual Plate No. 4
Kalevala motif. Design Raija Uosikkinen. Signature and authentic Arabia, Finland on back. Made of stoneware. This is the fourth plate in the series of 24 (1976–1999). It is made in a limited edition with no reprinting possible.
"Then the dusty wicked herd-boy, / Kullervo, Kalervo's offspring, / Homeward drove the bears before him, / And the wolf-flock to the farmyard, / And the bears he thus commanded, / And the wolves he thus instructed."
This is a quotation from the Finnish National Epic Kalevala. It is written in English, Finnish and Swedish on the backside of the plate. The famous Arabia artist Raija Uosikkinen has chosen to depict the lines in brown, golden beige, black, white and deepest dark blue, giving the plate a very rustic touch. The picture shows the herd-boy Kullervo blowing his horn as he drives the bears and wolves before him. A black raven is sitting in a tree and far beyond is the farmhouse.
The plate comes in excellent condition apart from a small chip (0,3 cm / 0.11 inches) on the backside line (see full-size image) and two small brown spots close to the hanging device holes on the backside (the spot is probably due to the manufacturing process). There is no other damage. No original box. No hanging device.
