Year 1980 Arabia Kalevala Series Annual Plate No. 5
Kalevala motif. Design Raija Uosikkinen. Signature and authentic Arabia, Finland on back. Made of stoneware. This is the fifth plate in the series of 24 (1976–1999). It is made in a limited edition with no reprinting possible.
"There was Väinämöinen weeping, / There Uvanto's swain lamented, / By the dreary clumps of willow, / By the tangled hedge of cherry / Moved his mouth, his beard was shaking, / But his lips he did not open."
This is a quotation from the Finnish National Epic Kalevala. It is written in English, Finnish and Swedish on the backside of the plate. The famous Arabia artist Raija Uosikkinen has chosen to depict the Kalevala lines in brown, golden beige, black, white and deepest dark blue, giving the plate a very rustic touch. The picture shows Väinämöinen weeping, Uvanto in a boat and a big bird with outstretched wings.
